Posture

As ankylosing spondylitis primarily effects the spine it is important for people with AS to be aware of posture; how you sit, stand and lie. An exercise programme should help you reduce stress on joints and other parts of your body during regular movement, work and recreational activities.

A long-term, personalised and well-instructed exercise programme may help you maintain a range of motion in the spine and joints. Certain physical fitness and sports activities as a part of an exercise programme can help you to improve posture.  It is also possible to monitor changes in posture by keeping a record of your height and chest expansion.

It is important to ensure you seek your healthcare team’s advice regarding which activities are best for you at any time to maintain your posture.
