Holidays

Having AS does not mean you cannot go on holiday. There are ways of overcoming problems that may arise. It may be useful to think about the following:

  • What is the nature of your destination – is the area hilly, rural or metropolitan?
  • How you will get there – what transport will you use and how can you make your journey more comfortable?
  • Travel insurance – do you have up-to-date travel insurance which covers your condition?
  • Medical facilities – are there medical facilities nearby if needed?

It is also useful to consider other aspects of your holiday, so you can make sure you will have the facilities that you need.

Airports

  • If you are travelling from an airport and you find it difficult to walk long distances, you can arrange for transport inside the airport terminal to take you from check-in to the boarding gate
  • Airports can also help arrange assistance with heavy bags

Hotels

  • It is useful to make sure hotels have facilities you need e.g. lifts, wheelchair access
  • Check if the hotel is near public transport
  • Check how hilly the area is around the hotel

Vaccinations

  • It is recommended that you consult your doctor if you need any travel vaccinations (e.g. polio, typhoid), before you receive them as vaccines may interfere with some AS treatments.
