Caring for someone with AS

Living with someone with AS can cause some difficulties as the main symptoms of this condition are pain, stiffness and fatigue. These may not be consistent and can fluctuate from day to day.

You can help by:

  • Knowing more about the condition to help you to understand the symptoms
  • Supporting everyday activities to help to keep a sense of normality
  • Supporting in work, as this may become more difficult in time
  • Finding suitable activities you can all participate in to help keep active

It is important to encourage the person with AS to:

  • Seek advice from their doctor, nurse or physiotherapist if their symptoms don’t go away or get worse
  • Do the exercises recommended by the physiotherapist
  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Ask the doctor or nurse if they have any questions or concerns about any aspect of their treatment

Talk about the condition and how you can help them manage it.
